we'll let you know when the heat's going to arrive, coming up. early in the commute. something that may be an issue as you come off the carquinez bridge. upper east shore, that's where my focus is now. live look outside at the bay bridge. neglected half of the bay bridge. the one that has the light show. the one that nobody's looking at anymore. i don't know why. it's wednesday, september 4th. this is "today in the bay." good morning. ninkz joining us. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> i'm marla tellez. laura and 0 jon have the morning off. breaking news in san leandro. despite desperate efforts by neighbors, one person has died in an overnight fire in a trailer home. fire started an hour ago at a trailer at grand avenue off interstate 580. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live in san leandro

where investigators are looking for a cause. >> reporter: i just had a chance to speak with a neighbor at the trailer park. it was around 3:30 in the morning. she started smelling smoke and it just kept getting stronger and stronger. she knew something was wrong. she went outside with another neighbor and they saw smoke coming from a trailer in the front of this trailer park. they believe that an elderly woman was inside. they tell me they banged on the windows and doors. they asked if she was okay and they heard a voice. she said, no, i'm not okay. they say they broke windows and that's when smoke poured out of the trailer. they say they tried the door but it was locked, they couldn't get in. when they did break the door open, it was hard to get inside, there was boxes and paper and other things blocking their way. they didn't hear from that woman again. of course, they say they were also calling 911, trying to get firefighters here. firefighters say when they arrived, they found smoke and flames pouring out and in fact,

the neighbors did all they could but breaking windows may have actually made the situation actually possibly worse, meaning more smoke and flames came from inside of the trailer. again, they found a deceased person inside. firefighters haven't said whether this is a map or woman. they say they are trying to sort that out. neighbors tell us it was an elderly woman who lived inside. firefighters knocked it down quickly but it was just too late. the neighbors are also telling us they believe that this woman may have been disabled. it might have been difficult for her to get out. at this point, firefighters say they still don't have a cause. reporting live in san leandro, christie smith, "today in the bay." we could learn more about how convicted kidnapper ariel castro was able to kill himself inside his prison cell. he was found hanged last night, pronounced dead at the hospital. more on the investigation. >> an investigation news under

way into how castro was able to kill himself. he was supposed to be in protective custody. that mean his was being monitored every 30 minutes. but he was not on suicide watch. he did have the cell to himself. it's still not clear how he did it or what he may have used. castro was found hanging in his prison cell in southern ohio after 9:00 last night. the staff at the prison performed cpr. he was taken to a hospital in columbus, where he died around 11:00 last night. ariel castro was sentenced in august to life in prison, plus 1,000 years after pleading guilty to 937 counts, including kidnapping, rape, and torture. he held three women captive for years in a home located in a cleveland neighborhood. that house was torn down a few weeks ago and has been replaced by a park. this morning, a lot of people in the community are applauding while there are looming questions as to how there could be a lapse in the system.

here in santa clara county makes strong accusations against aldon smith and former 49 and current titan delaney walker. the plaintiff, esporlas claim his was shot twice, sustains serious and permits injuries but does not know exactly who the gun man was. this is the first public document to provide details of a party that took place june 29th last year up this road in the east san jose foothills at smith's 8,000-square foot home. the lawsuit says smith and walker, who were legally intoxicated, appeared on the balcony of smith's home and fired shots into the air in an apparent attempt to end the party. it goes on to say walker made his way to the driveway where he allegedly fired more shots into the air and towards others attending the party. the suit also claims both men knew the handguns were illegally possessed. nbc bay area cob tained pictures from neighbors showing crime

scene investigators camps outside smith's east san jose home. we are obtained the incident report from the san jose fire department which says victims were shot in the legs and thigh, that the suspects left in a vehicle down the hill and report goes on to include the words "gang related." yesterday smith's attorney will have no comment on the investigation. hoping to get a comment from walker, that was a call that was made after hours, that call was not returned. live here in santa clara, bob redell, today in the bay. the decorated british olympic sailor killed while practicing for the america's cup on the san francisco bay will be honored. i special mural in memory will be unveiled at the academy of art university in san francisco. a member of sweden's team was killed when the 72-foot catamaran capsized in may.

hours including 6.5 magnitude quakes off the coast of alaska and japan. how far, none of these quakes triggers tsunami warnings. but they are reminder of the 2011 earthquake in japan that sent a soourn crashing on to the california coast. images of cars trying to escape to higher ground in half moon bay are fresh on people's mind. that's what you're looking at here. san mateo county says the warning system was due for a replacement. the county has installed eight new sirens along the coast. rob mayeda will have a cooldown, then a heat up. talk about it. >> for now, we'll see the cooler part of the forecast forshire. seeing 50s and low 60s with patches of low clouds across the bay. strong onshore wind. notice those increasing this afternoon. that's going to keep inland temperatures down and the system responsible for ushering in a stronger sea breeze. once this low tracks inland across the pacific northwest, that's going to open the door for a region of high pressure

here around arizona to build back towards california and across the pacific high pressure as well. friday, notice a big jump in temperatures. today, comfortable. breezy at times. 80 san jose. 68 san francisco. 75 in oakland. similar temperatures by the way for tomorrow. but here comes friday. you see things heating up, ten-degree jump in inland temperatures. out to the coast, 70s and 80s. mid to upper 90s part of the weekend forecast with low clouds closer to the coastline. we'll see if the novel of the heat wears off. does the new bay bridge have novelty to it? >> it does. we'll see if it was popular as yesterday. look like all morning people heading there to drive across it during that first day. we had metering lights into the afternoon and the afternoon commute. 880 through fremont, easy drive. there's that bay bridge, incline

welcome back. 5:13. the latest buzz in consumer electronics, the smart watch. we should see the first one from samsung later this morning. >> good morning. i'll tell you, i'm mystified by tech trends and the smart watch is one of those times. apple, google, samsung said to be pursuing one. we may see samsung's as soon as this morning. this is video from samsung's last big unveiling last spring. the company will unveil new products in berlin this morning. 11:00 a.m. our time. samsung expected to start adding extra security to its android powered phones after reports showed 80% of all virus attacks on mobile devices were abled at android. iphone was a fraction of 1%.

linkedin will offer more shares in the company to investors. they want to raise another $1 billion apapers filed, it gives no purpose for fund-raising. it's possible they have a purchase in mind. the stock structure will leave the founder with 60% of votes. he's still in charge. investors do not like these secondary offerings. it dilutes the overall value. it's like playing poker, halfway through the evening someone comes up with a new stack of chips. good morning, bertha. >> good morning. we've got the futures lower here. the market started off september with a modest rally. stocks rising early on upbeat manufacturing data out of the u.s. and europe. but then paring gains after obama call for a congressional vote on his plan for limited military vote in syria. boehner offered support for the

continues. a's now a game back out of first. dar v darvish and parker. first pitch 12:35. west coast view, a weather system passing by to the north. active weather in the pacific northwest. that system for now is holding off the heat wave as the system kind of brushes by to the north today. it's going to keep a strong push of onshore winds. by the weekend, yet stream moves to the north. high pressure builds in. 90s inland and 70s and 80s towards the coast. you can escape the heat by heading down highway 17 through the weekend. today near 80 in san jose. speaking of santa cruz, 83, nice for the afternoon. tri-valley, numbers in the mid-80s. hit the temperatures by 2:00. 3:00, 4:00, good strong sea breeze kicking in to cool off the inland temperatures. around the north bay, temperatures in the low 80s this afternoon. 68 san francisco.

mid-70s in oakland. one of the cooler days over the next seven days. the temperatures jumping up, friday, maybe a slight cooldown tomorrow. but friday and beyond, the heat is back in the bay area. mid to upper 90s for the weekend in our valleys. 70s and 80s near the coast. take your pick. back to 9s, everything covered around the bay area this weekend. >> we have our selection. find your speed, a bit of a selection. here toward the tracy area, off of 205, we talked about this all of the altamont pass, slowing. bottling up where the two freeways meet. traditional pattern. average speeds coming down toward 47 miles per hour. bulk of the slowing here at altamont pass. a live look here where a couple of minutes lights should be on. screen shot, this here westbound traffic. still right through the same area, build starts to happen toward livermore. by the time into livermore and

report. bob redell's covering that story for you. a construction company in london says it has a temporary fix for a skyscraper that melted a car. the skyscraper, nicknamed walkie-talkie in london's financial district. a local man says the glare from the new building so intense that it melted part of his jaguar when he left it parked on the street for a couple hours. the developer working on the building says the problematic glare lasts two hours a day and is expected to continue for two or three weeks because of the sun's position in the sky. in the meantime, the developer has made plans to put a temporary screen to block the glare from the street below. >> screen block on a building. >> i throughout it was bad if my lipstick got melted. no apologies from senator mccain though caught playing poker on his iphone during the hearing on syria. the arizona senator playing

they tell me that they did all they could to save an elderly woman who lived in the trailer here behind me, it's behind this fence. you can see, they call it trailer number one. they say they did all they could to save this woman but it was too late. firefighters are on scene, along with san leandro police. the area cordoned off on grand avenue. 3:00 this morning neighbors in the trailer park started getting a strong smell of smoke. they realized that a front trailer was on fire. they didn't see flames at the time just a lot of smoke. he yelled to the woman, are you okay, she said no. they started breaking windows and trying to get in to help but the fire was getting worse and worse. more smoky. they say the front door of the trailer was locked. >> grabbed it to open, but there's locks. i never seen locks like that in the trailer. she has locks on her door. must have been in the back. the second window, that's the

one i was breaking. >> reporter: you broke the window, broke the door, you couldn't get her out. >> i couldn't get her out. too much smoke. >> reporter: she tells us she hurt her hand on the broken glass from that window. firefighters have not confirmed yet to us who lived in the trailer, man or woman. neighbors say an elderly woman what who may have had disables and that's why she's not able to get out. firefighters are on scene. they still do not know how it started. reporting live in san leandro, christie smith, "today in the bay." firefighters trying to figure out what sparked a fire on the ground in newark overnight. this happened at james l. bunker elementary school on smith avenue between birch and cherry streets. firefighters tell us the fire started in a home on the ground where a caretaker lived.

area's investigative unit first uncovered. in the lawsuit filed tuesday, it makes strong accusations against all pro linebacker lp and former 49 and current titan, delaney walker the plaintiff, a man named ron dole esporlas shot twice but doesn't know who the gunman was. the party took place june 29th last year, up the road in the east san jose foothills at smith's 8,000 square foot home. the lawsuit says smith and walker, who were legally intoxicated, appeared on the balcony of smith's home and fired shots into the air in an effort to end the party. walker made his way to the driveway where he allegedly fired more shots into the air and towards others attending the party. the suit claims both men knew

likely bid on a new contract if freed from its current one with the county. the officials will not consider any rebidding unless the board of supervisors agrees. rural hmetro has come under fir for late response times and poorly maintained crews. fighting the spread of the deadly west nile virus, crews fogging for mosquitos near north san jose. they'll be focusing 0 the area between charcon avenue, highway 101. north also in milpitas, crews will fog along interstate 680. officials say adult moss skeet toes in san jose and milpitas tested positive for the west nile virus. 5:36. those heading out the door now, let's check in with rob mayeda and see what conditions you'll be up for. >> right now you can see the bay bridge nice and clear behind

you. after the natural fogging that's going on around this morning, that's napa and vallejo, visible down to a quarter mile. cooler this morning, 50s, low 60s. sea breeze out there strong into fairfield. across the carquinez bridge, you may notice that and venetia, too. into livermore a weather system passing by to the north that's going to strengthen the sea breeze. for the next two days, mild temperatures before high pressure starts to build back towards the bay area. that's going to allow temperatures jump up starting friday. -- 68 san francisco. next few day comfortable. next two days. and then the heat cranks up inland. 90s for the valley starting friday. upper 90s saturday. low 90s into the beginning of next week. >> talking about what you spoke about for the north bay, first start in the bay bridge toll

plaza and the backup. backup we see the cash lanes are the issue. that's typical. we should see metering lights turned on in the next 10 to 15 minutes. yesterday turned around about now, after this report. watch for the same. keeping metering lights looks like slower to keep traffic on the bridge lighter. we'll watch the east shore freeway and the approach. east shore freeway moves smoothly. slowing toward the berkeley curve below 16 miles per hour. watch for a similar but lighter flow of traffic. earlier fire on the side of the freeway has been clears, crews said there was no smoke, so no issue. not smoke but fog. american canyon, napa, orange section on the map, traffic and weather maps tied together, highway 29. you'll see slowing through american canyon. towards fremont, 880 slowly.

president visits sweden, talks about those issues, we're also hearing from putin who says he hasn't ruled out supporting military action in syria. with the president overseas and headed to the g-20, syria still seems to be the overarching issue, despite the fact that this g-20 summit is supposed to be about the economy. it's syria that the president is going to get consensus on. particularly with france. we understand president obama has a won on one with the french president. he's been open to possible military strikes. congress here debates whether or not they're going to authorize that, the president today is overseas, first in sweden, and then in russia, trying to get more backing from the international community. >> we will see the outcome. thanks so much into the president could get key backing today for military strike in syria. the senate foreign relations committee expected to approve a measure supporting a military

strike. republicans and democrats back a no troops on the grounder action in retaliation for alleged chemical weapons attacks. obama administration says there's been more than a dozen chemical weapon strikes on the syrian people. yesterday secretary of state kerry told the senate foreign relations committee, syrian president assad's regime would continue to use chemical weapons. again its people against the u.s. --less the u.s. takes action. putin is warning the west against taking action in syria. he'll support a u.n. resolution on military strikes if there's evidence to back it up, will not support one-sided action by the u.s. putin hopes he and obama will have serious discussions on syria in st. petersburg this week. we could learn more about how convicted kidnapper ariel castro was able to kill himself inside his prison cell. he was found hanked last night and pronounced dead at the hospital.

ariel castro was in protective custody that means he was monitored every 30 minutes. he was not on suicide watch which would have meant constant observation. a lot of questions to how he apparently killed himself and what he may have used. sentenced in early august to life in prison, plus 1,000 years for the kidnapping, rape, torture of three women. he held them captive over a decade in cleveland, ohio. that home was torn down a few weeks ago and a park has been put up in its place. castro was found hanging in his prison cell in ohio after 9:00 last night. the staff performed cpr and taken to a hospital in columbus where he died around 11:00 last night. after his initial arrest, closely watched in the county jail but taken off of suicide watch after authorities determined he was not a suicide risk. >> i saw the news accounts this morning that i know that they

that, the traffic break lasted three minutes. i couldn't get the recording quick enough to show that. this results in a traffic getting loose heading towards the bay bridge, maze, berkeley curve. the toll plaza, metering lights have been turned on. fas-trak laned backed up. the cash lanes will start backing up as the brunt of the commute down the east shore freeway makes its way to the toll plaza. hov lanes clears. this is the packup that started and will continue because you saw the ripple effect, the stop ripples up toward golden gate field. the rest of the maze smoothly towards the bay bridge. tri-valley, west 580 and westbound 84 through livermore. 680 not a problem dune through pleasanton and sunol. san mateo bridge, bill in volume. dumbarton bridge, moving nicely.
